Dear future volunteer,
have you ever heard of flašinet or a street organ?
I've never had, until now. This month, Gregor discovered one on the streets of Brno. It’s a strange little wooden box on wheels that plays cheerful looping songs just by turning a handle. Gregor was impressed by its sound.
Later, he was exploring a bit about its history and found that these instruments first appeared in Europe a long time ago, in the 18th century.
Flašinet was very popular on the streets, and it was played by the traveling musicians, often poor immigrants and injured veterans.
Gregor gladly remembers the short talk and the wise words shared with the old, smiling musician.
Visiting a friend and spending time in Brno gave him a fresh perspective. He felt that childlike wonder again, that he always feels when exploring new places.
Back in Maribor, his days were filled with different tasks. He thought about his projects and found time for drawing, but also for visiting places he hadn't explored before, both in the city and beyond.
But also, he tried to look at familiar places through different eyes.
That, at least, is easy to do.
If you ever feel like you need a new look at your everyday life, you can always climb the stairs of Kalvarija.
From there, with a bit of distance, you can watch the streets you walk every day from a whole new point of view.
And to see that your thoughts aren't always as big as they feel.
